Life changing experiences

Some life changing experiences are positive and go on being positive long after the event. However ┬áthis can’t be said for all and is not always the case, life events are so different for us all. Having someone who is a trained professional, a listener, a guide, and non judgmental who can give you a private space, the support to help you understand your difficulties can help reduce the effects of your life changing experiences when they are less than positive.

People are often heard saying that “I should feel lucky because there are other people out there that have worse things happen to them than what I have had happen to me”. The truth is that distress is distress, the cause may vary but the feelings are the same for all and very real.
There is an agreement of a recognised condition called ‘secondary post traumatic stress disorder’ or ‘compassion fatigue’ this term is particular applied to therapists and counsellors, however it can also apply to family members or friends who listen to recounted events, even listening and watching news.
Because of the 24-7 connection that we have and the streaming of global news into our personal space, this news is often very emotive, adding to the repetition of the story as they unfold, this can compound the emotions felt. Most TV organisations do provide a contact number stating that “if you have been effected then contact them on the number provided”.
I have become aware of more people talking to me about such issues and this was the reason for writing this weblog. If you think you may be suffering or a friend of yours is having difficulties then here are a few pointers to look out for.
Symptoms and awareness can vary from person to person. That said if you find yourself changing things that you used to do because of what you have seen or experienced and this behavioural change dose not revert back to how they use to be with in a few weeks, or you have difficulty sleeping, experience flash backs of the event, find yourself drinking more. I would suggest that you seek professional guidance. It’s not uncommon to experience short term shock after an event and this often passes in a relative short period of time (few weeks) but if you feel that you can’t get things out of your mind or things do not improve contact a Professional health care provider for guidance.
